Our Key Person Approach

Key-Person

What is the Key-Person Approach?

The Key-Person Approach is a fundamental aspect of the Early Years Foundation Stage, mandated by the framework. It revolves around the idea that each child should have a special connection with a designated staff member, known as the Key Person. This approach fosters a reciprocal bond between the Key Person, the child, and their family. By having this dedicated connection, the child feels secure and confident to explore their surroundings and build relationships with others. The Key Person acts as a consistent support figure, maintaining a metaphorical "invisible elastic thread" of attachment to the child throughout their time at the nursery. This connection is not about constant supervision but rather about providing a sense of security and trust for the child.

Our Approach

Each child is assigned a key person from their initial sessions at our facility. While this key person may occasionally change as we assess the child's bonds, we prioritise creating an environment where all children and staff interact and learn together. Our open-plan setup facilitates this collaborative approach to play and learning. We encourage children to develop strong relationships with all staff members. During drop-off and pick-up times, any staff member may welcome your child, conveying pertinent information to the key person. However, if parents wish to speak directly with their child's key person, they can request a meeting or arrange a convenient time.

Parents can discuss their child's progress in detail during scheduled meetings with the key person or a designated "special other." It's essential to reserve time off the room for these meetings. If parents require additional meetings outside the scheduled times, they can consult the management team. The team can coordinate with staff schedules to arrange a meeting in the office or a phone call with the child's key person.
